Rapid evolution of viviparity on island populations of Salamandra salamandra and Brief presentation of the BIODESERTS group

Abstract

The fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) displays intraspecific diversity of reproductive strategies: ovoviviparity (females give birth to larvae that develop in aquatic habitats) and a derived reproductive mode, viviparity, with females giving birth to terrestrial, fully metamorphosed individuals. Viviparous populations occur only in the Cantabrian mountains and coast (S. s. bernardezi and S. s. fasutosa), and on two small offshore islands in the Atlantic ocean, 3 km from the northwestern coast of the Iberian Peninsula (S. s. gallaica). I will show past and present genetic studies on insular populations of S. salamandra addressing the origin of microevolutionary processes that lead to this reproductive shift.


The primary objective of the group is to assess biodiversity patterns in desert, arid and semi-arid regions of North-West Africa and the Mediterranean Basin, and particular attention is being paid to the Sahel and the Saharan “mountain-islands”. Climate Changes predictions forecast significant warming and increase of aridity conditions for these regions and other bordering areas of current deserts. Thus, the Mediterranean and the Sahel are upfront desertification areas were biodiversity research is urgent. The group is committed at gathering reliable data at useful scales and at producing outputs to be used as guidelines for conservation policies.  Ecological modelling, remote sensing, morphological and genetic data, and GIS are used in three main research lines:

1) Biodiversity distribution

2) Evolutionary and Landscape processes

3) Conservation planning.
