NC-AFM image of a cleaved BaF2(111) surface at 21ºC and 40% relative humidity. The BaF2(111) face consists of a hexagonal array of barium and fluoride ions with a lattice constant very close to that of the basal face of hexagonal ice and induces the formation of ice-like films when exposed to water vapor even at 21ºC. The cleaved surface shows monoatomic steps and flat terraces. Water adsorbs forming ice-like structures preferentially at the steps following the V-shape of the triangular steps.
