CURSO DE POSTGRADO: "GENDERED SPIRITUALITIES IN EARLY MODERN JEWISH CULTURE", SESIÓN 3. Parte 1.

Tercera sesión del curso de postgrado «Gendered Spiritualities in Early Modern Jewish Culture», dedicada a «La prominencia excepcional de mujeres en el movimiento mesiánico de Šabbetay ?ebí y sus derivaciones posteriores». El cabalista de la ciudad portuaria de Esmirna Šabbetay ?ebí inspiró un movimiento mesiánico que sacudió al mundo judío durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVII. En el momento de mayor apogeo de su celebridad como mesías judío esperado, se convierte en otoño de 1666 al islam. Tradicionalmente visto como un acto de traición vergonzoso, su apostasía fue denunciada inmediatamente por unos e interpretada por otros en términos cabalísticos como parte integral de su misión redentora. A pesar de los repetidos intentos de las autoridades rabínicas para erradicar lo que ahora se consideraba como un movimiento herético, persiste durante al menos otro siglo y medio, cada vez más en forma de grupos sectarios clandestinos. En esta conferencia se destaca cómo una de sus características más distintivas, desde el comienzo hasta su desaparición, fue la participación activa y la alta visibilidad de las mujeres dentro de sus filas, y se exploran las diversas manifestaciones de esta anomalía, situándola en sus contextos históricos y teológicos particulares.

Third session of the course «Gendered Spiritualities in Early Modern Jewish Culture», dedicated to «The exceptional prominence of women in the 17th-century messianic movement of Sabbatai Tsevi and its 18th-century offshoots». Sabbatai Tsevi was a kabbalist from the Ottoman port town of Izmir, who inspired a messianic movement that swept through the whole of the Jewish world during the second half of the 17th century. At the height of his international celebrity as the long-awaited Jewish messiah, he abruptly converted to Islam in the autumn of 1666. Traditionally viewed as a shameful act of betrayal, his apostasy, instantly denounced by some, was interpreted by others in kabbalistic terms as an integral part of his redemptive mission. Despite repeated attempts by rabbinic authorities to root out what was now being viewed as a heretical movement, it persisted for at least another century and a half, albeit increasingly as a clandestine sectarian organisation. One of its most distinctive features, from inception to demise, was the active involvement and high visibility of women within its ranks. The lecture explores the diverse manifestations of this anomaly, setting it in its particular historical and theological contexts.
